New South Wales | Update to the Northern NSW flooding

New South Wales | 27 Jan 2012

The Tweed Valley has had some heavy rainfall this morning, with reports of falls up to 70mm in five hours.

Minor flooding is expected to occur in Chinderah and Murwillumbah this afternoon. With many campers and holiday makers in low-lying areas, make sure you tune into the local radio stations for the most up-to-date information and safety advice.

Be aware that if there are a lot of people moving in the area, there could be traffic congestion.

There are still isolations for about 1200 people through the Bellingen, Thora, Darkwood and upper Macleay and Mullumbimbi.

The NSW SES has had over 850 requests for assistance, mainly for sandbagging, leaking roofs and trees down.

There have been 45 flood rescues since the beginning of the event, with a lot of these for people in vehicles.

There is an easing trend from today however further heavy rainfall is possible next week in particular in inland areas of NSW. It is important that residents and businesses are prepared for the possibility of further heavy rain and flooding.

There are still warnings in place form the Bureau of Meteorology including nine Flood Warnings, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and a Severe Weather Warning.

Motorists are reminded to never enter floodwater and drive to the conditions of the day. If you do require emergency help, please call the NSW SES on 132 500.

With the easing of the weather, it is a good time for residents and business owners to prepare their premises for further bad weather. FloodSafe advice can be found on our website.
