NSW | 9 Feb 2012

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, a low pressure trough over inland New South Wales is expected to deepen during Thursday and Friday as a high pressure system south of Bight extends a ridge towards the Tasman Sea.

On Friday another trough is expected to develop just off the coast, with a low possibly developing near the south coast during the weekend. Showers will increase to rain periods in the southeast with locally heavy falls developing tonight. This rain will continue on the south coast and ranges, and be locally heavy.

A Flood Watch has been issued for minor to moderate flooding for the Bega, Moruya, Molongolo and Quanbeyan Rivers. Locakl flash flooding is also possible. The NSW SES is ensuring that there are adequate resources available and that communities are warned. People living and working along the affected rivers are asked to lift pumps and to relocate livestock and equipment to higher ground. If isolation is likely stock up now on food, fuel, medicine and other essentials.

Overnight there was heavy rain on the Mid-north Coast and North Coast of the State with falls up to 78mm. The rest of the coastal fringe received falls around 10mm. Elsewhere Dubbo received 65 mm of rainfall associated with thunderstorm activity. A minor flood warning was issued for the Bellinger River at Thora. There was one flood rescue at Mullumbimby, with the occupants able to get out of their vehicle to safety before the SES arrived.

Today the NSW SES continues to plan for resupply of communities in the north west of the State. Revised flood predictions by the Bureau of Meteorology have meant that towns and farms are likely to be isolated for a longer period of time.

The main towns isolated at present are Wee Waa (2300 people), Mungindi (700) and Collaraenebri (500). There are also extensive rural isolations.

Towns that are expected to be isolated are Goodooga (250), Weilmoringle (70), Brewarrina (1050), Walgett (1800) and Lightning Ridge (2800).

If you require resupply or other assistance from the NSW SES call 132 500. If you are in a life-threatening emergency, call 000 immediately.
