Paramedics treated a man for a number of serious injuries at Mill Park on Tuesday 7 February after his motorcycle collided with a car.

Advanced life support and intensive care paramedics were called to the corner of Plenty Road and Mayfield Drive just after 4pm. Intensive care paramedic Joshua Betts said that when they arrived they found the 43-year-old man lying on the road.

‘We calmed him as we assessed him and found that he had a number of serious injuries to his chest, right arm and leg. We also suspected that he may have suffered a fractured pelvis.

‘Thankfully he was wearing protective clothing, but his injuries were still extensive and he was in severe pain.

‘Both of his lungs had collapsed, he told us that he was having trouble breathing and his chest wasn’t moving much at all when he tried to take a breath in. Because of that we had to insert large needles into both sides of his chest to release the pressure in there and re-inflate his lungs.

‘Given the severity of his injuries he required a large amount of pain relief before we were able to splint his fractures. Once his condition had been stabilised we were able to lift him onto a stretcher.

‘Given the nature and severity of his injuries we organised for an air ambulance helicopter to transport him to the Alfred Hospital. He was in a critical condition,’ Mr Betts said.
