Whether the media gets \tit right or wrong at this point is unlikely to make a dent in the public \tperception of being at the heart of something wicked this way comes.<\/p>\n

If you were to take a \tpulse of America right now, I believe you\u2019d find it in tachycardia with a \thint of all-out gallop as intense fear rides on the cusp of all-out panic.<\/p>\n

The indicators for me \tarrive on the hour in the form of email queries from healthcare \tprofessionals, community leaders, and emergency management colleagues \twanting to compare notes on what personal steps they can take to protect \tthemselves and their loved ones from H1.<\/p>\n

To further confuse and confound, there \tare mixed messages being sent by federal, state and county health officials \tto the public they serve, e.g. \t 1020 State officials understand and share frustration associated with H1N1 \tvax shortages [Massachusetts]<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you ever wonder how rumor generators get primed, read this \tpiece out of North \tDakota and imagine the news being transmitted on a national game of broken \ttelephone: \t 1020 DoH recommends revax of some individuals against H1N1 [North Dakota]<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With so many people with \tfunctional limitations [the vulnerable at the moment] mixed into the at-risk \tgroups, this ongoing crisis represents a significant challenge for us all. \tHow do we ensure a fully-inclusive response?<\/p>\n

When I’ve tried discussing H1N1 with some of my \t\tcolleagues, there has been tremendous pushback with an accusation of my \t\t‘having given in to the hype.’ The claims of hype tend to fade as more \t\tpeople we know are affected by a nasty bit of influenza that has a habit \t\tof going hard after the very young.<\/p>\n

Does H1N1 represent the perfect storm with an even more devastating legacy \tthan that of Katrina? \tKatrina struck the Gulf Coast and still managed to impact an entire \tgeneration, create its own diaspora and continues to have a lingering effect \ton millions of people. Katrina had a beginning and is still looking for an \tend.<\/p>\n

H1N1 is an \t\t\tongoing evolving global crisis with nothing to link it to the \t\t\tepisodic view we have for emergency management. And unlike all those \t\t\tother crises occurring out there \u2013 famine, civil war, genocide, \t\t\tmalaria, HIV\/AIDS \u2013 this one is affecting us right here in our \t\t\thomes. So H1N1 has our rapt attention and even with all eyes on the \t\t\t\u2018prize\u2019 we\u2019re still unable to manage this ongoing emergency.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it feels as if the professionals would rather not disturb the \tpeace with discussions focused on what happens when the victims of \temergencies or the emergencies themselves don’t act in ways predicted by the \tplan.<\/p>\n

Were it only so easy if disasters had neither victims nor responders but \tonly featured rulemakers who could wear funny hats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
